Question: what is causing noise

I just recently purchased a 99 Cougar with about 89k miles on it. When I drive over bumps, it is really rough and makes a rumble noise in the rear. Any clue what that is? I assume it has something to do with the rear suspension, can it be fixed by just replacing the shock absorber or do you need to replace the entire strut assembly? Thanks

It is really hard to say what needs to be replaced. It could be the strut insert, the entire strut, or it could be another suspension component altogether.

Try pushing down on the rear of the car to determine if the shocks/struts seem worn. This may yield a clue, but you will mostly likely need to visit a shop and have them diagnose the problem.
