What is causing my starter to malfunction? on 1998 Pontiac Grand Am

146,000 miles. Front end damage. After driving for long periods of time, car wont start back up. If i hold the hose overthe starter for some time, the car starts right up. What is the problem?

Have starter 'bench tested' before replacing , but that does sound like the problem. Make sure ALL connections are clean and tight. Check any ground cables that might be loose from any body work that may have been done.
