1997 Chevrolet Lumina Question: What happens to engine when water pump needs replacing on a 1996 lumina?

I was told by mechanic that my water pump needs replacing after he replace intake valve and leaking radiator. I have spots on garage floor showing leaks from water pump i was told.

    It will overheat! If the water pump is leaking on this 3.1 there WILL be a line of coolant thrown onto the radiator and up onto the under side of the hood.
    Also drive belt will be wet. Pump is the upper pulley closest to the rad. looking at the engine from the front of car, it is under a small black plastic belt guard (shield) that has a picture of the belt on it. Easy repair for anyone handy with a wrench!
