it has beeb there for a while and looks like it appeared a while after the last oilk change

    It means there is a Diagnostic Trouble Code registered in the DME (AKA: ECM) computer and the car needs a computer diagnostic to see the cause.
    I suggest to take your car to a BMW independent shop to get it diagnosed.
