my book tells me to remove almost everything including the ball joint and the starter. Is all that necessary just to change the gasket? Also what is the best way to remove the crank pulley, and do i need to remove the engine to make the repair?

You need a pulley puller to pull pulley and the rest is pretty self explanitory..

I double checked Mitchell and it says water pump, power steering, balancer. Nothing about ball joints and I don't remember having to do it as well, but we have all kinds of tools that help us by-pass some operations.

What type of repair guide do you have? It is not even close!! Better get some hands-on help with this one, maybe check youtube for a video on the repair.... What is the reason for this repair,,leaking? Sure it's the timing cover gasket? That's pretty uncommon for this engine!! Better double check it,,twice!!!
