Question: what causes knocking, then smoking from the engine, then eventual shutdown

 Rookie

while driving my van every time i stepped on the gas it would make a wierd terrible knocking noise and then while driving, my engine started smoking, then it died and would not start again

    crazychefpatti,

    Your concerns seem serious - I am thinking that damage could already be done. The engine could have been overheating. An overheating 3.8L V6 like that which is likely in your Windstar can make a knocking noise. And this engine is also very succeptale to head gasket failure when overheating.
