what can cause a ticking noise from the engine? on 2005 Ford Mustang GT

ticking sound coming from the top of the engine on the right side, during idle, and gets louder at accelleration!

First things I think of are an exhaust leak where the manifold connects to the cylinder head, and a valve lifter or camshaft problem making noise under the valve cover. The exhaust leak is easy to find if you listen carefully under the hood, maybe using a piece of tubing in your ear to pinpoint the source. If the noise is from under the valve cover, it's most likely a cam or lifter problem.
