My car started overheating about two weeks ago and the interior heat stopped working. We thought it was the thermostat so we replaced it. While we were adding more antifreeze to the system, we noticed that it was pouring out from the lower part of the water pump, but couldn't get underneath to see if it was leaking elsewhere. We also noticed that the gap between the lower pulley and the engine casing and the gap between the upper pulley and the engine casing was significantly different and that there were metal shavings clinging to the engine casing where the closer pulley was. Am I looking at just a water pump issue, or does it seem like it may be more than that?

It sounds like just the water pump, however it would be a advised to replace your timing belt and tensioner at the same time as they both have to be removed to replace the water pump.

I ended up bringing it to the shop. Unfortunately they said the pipe that goes from the water pump to the back of the engine is completely corroded. =[ They said they would have to replace the pipe, water pump, o-rings, and a couple belts. That would come out to $710... without replacing the timing belt. If the original belt is in there, it would need to be replaced and that would add another $170 to the bill. needless to say, it looks like it's the end of the line for my beautiful dodge avenger... thank you for your response tho!!
