What could be the cause of my leak. Could it be a freeze plug, its in the area of the water pump but its not the water pump. Have changed thermostate, water pump, hose.

the water pump can still be doing its job fine however in many cases the gasket to your water pump can be failing which will need replacing soon if this is the case go ahead and change out that old waterpump also.

I am having the same problem, water pump was replaced last summer(like six months ago) and luckily I bought the pump with a lifetime warranty, meaning.... I can get a new one once. There is a little weep hole on the bottom of the pump as well as the weep port behind the pulley on the top of the pump, to which you can see the shaft of the water pump. On the bottom there is another weep hole that has a ball bearing set into it. It is leaking from that weep hole with the ball bearing in it. I know my water pump is working fine otherwise so, do I change the pump out once again or throw silver stop leak in it (the silver colored powdery looking) and see if it stops leaking? Knowing I have a lifetime warranty and the pump is working fine otherwise, I will try the stop leak first.

I'm sure by now you have replaced the pump, although the pump is working fine there is a seal on the shaft, when that begins to leak, there is no stopping it. The weep hole is to let you know it is leaking.
Taurus' are known for leaks between the timing chain cover and block, 2001-02 must have had a bad casting for the timing chain covers as I know of 3 people with the same problem I had. Good pump, but leak between the timing chain cover and block.

I believe I am having this issue with my 01 Taurus. But it only seems to leak when I'm braking. It appears coolant may leaking down by the water pump area, but the pump seems to be working just fine. The weep hole appears to be leaking and around the water pump area. I am stumped..
