Question: voltage bad

 Rookie

had new altenator checked its good. was told it could be a bad wire? found 3 wires bare coming from starter. one coroded going into a black connector was wondering what would happen if i wired that direc, the connector looks like its just attaching wires together???? please let me know what you think Please

• voltage regulator
  where is the voltage regulator located I have replaced the alternator , spark plugs and fuel filter I have a battery charger...

• should I return the the new altenator?
  I replaced the bad alternator with a new one but the checks say the voltage is bad... Should I return the new one I put on the car and trade it for a different one????
