business owner, own 1996 Mazda 4x4 MPV with over 181,000 miles on it. Use Amsoil's best oil and oil filter for it as well as Restore and Motorkote in the engine oil. Still gets over 14 mpg around the city in Minneapolis. This has been a great car requiring very little maintenace considering it's age and the fact that it has been fully loaded and pulled an enclosed 4'x6' equipment trailer for the past 3 years and 25,000 miles. I use Amsoil transmission fluid in transmission and Amsoil coolant in radiator.

Problem Reported: Ticking Noise From Valve Lash Adjusters Due to Infrequent Oil Changes
May 27, 2010, 11:07 AM

A loud ticking noise (hydraulic valve lifter noise) may be heard from the top of the engine, particularly when the engine is still cold. The noise may occur more frequently on higher mileage vehicles; Hydraulic valve lash adjusters may need to be replaced to correct this issue. Following the maintenance schedule for oil changes will also help prevent a recurrence of the noise.
