Universal Joint Replacement

The driveshaft transmits power from the transmission to the differential at the rear of the vehicle. Suspension flexibility is incorporated into the drive shaft. To allow flexibility during changes in suspension height, each end of the driveshaft has a universal joint or flexible coupling.

If you hear squeaking or clunking when you accelerate, your car’s universal joints may be worn. You may also feel a “shuddering” when driving. Neglecting these signs could cause the driveshaft to separate from the vehicle. At best, this is an expensive repair. Worst case: your vehicle can be damaged.

Universal joints should be inspected at every oil change. If the joints or couplings need to be replaced, the driveshaft must be removed first.
