I was told that this part is obsolete and cannot be repaired. This is the trunk lid full- width light that I heard was referred to as a ballast. Any ideas for repair or replacement? LSC model does not have back-up lights built into the trunk lid. Back-up lights are incorporated into the quarter panel taillights.

There is a gentleman in Texas that sells a customized ballast for the neon tail light. Many of us have used it and it is excellent. Comes complete with do it yourself instructions. I have had mine in for about a year and a half without any issues.
You can contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org
He sells the unit for about $90.00.
Search "Glitch" at lincolnvscadillac.com and see what other users have to say.
I am not related or affiliated with "Glitch", just a satisfied customer that wants to help other Mark VIII owners.
You can also search your problem there. There is a mesh inside your light housing that is used for noise suppression for the radio, it can "fall" and cause a ground problem with the reflective coating in the light also.

You will not find Glitch as a member but, you will find messages about him and his ballast.
This may help you to make a decision about whether or not you want to do business with him. I have not heard any negative comments about him on any of the Lincoln boards.
This link may also help you with diagnosing a problem with the neon bulb, housing and ballast.
There's also feedback and ordering links on that web page.
Oh yeah, the ballast that I purchased from him still works great.
I believe that his price has also gone up to $100.00 now but it sure beats playing e-bay roulette with a used ballast.
