If the automatic transmission does not shift properly and the Check Engine Light illuminates, the speed sensors in the transmission may have failed. The sensors are simple and inexpensive to replace.Google+

Transmission won't shift gears/CEL on
Visitor, 2004 Hyundai Sonata, 222,650 mi
Car over heated. Rt/Rr wheel bearing went bad. Check engine light came on. Had wheel bearing replaced. Pulled thermostat. Check engine stayed on. Drove car and now stuck in 3rd gear. Drove 160 miles to get car home. Car engine ran perfectly. Didn't over heat. Upon breaking at low speed (~ 15 mph) car jerked and felt like it trying to slip into reverse. (Felt like the brakes had locked up). This happened only once during the entire trip. Car moderately jerks when shifting from park to reverse or into drive. The slower I shift, the less the jerk. Haven't had the car diagnosed yet.
Transmission will not shift, not sure what the issue is.
