Are you sure the shudder is from the transmission? Is it possible it's coming from the driveshaft? Or is it a shudder when it is shifting?

Happened to me twice in years past. Both times it was the locking torque converter going bad. In my '90 Dakota I thought it was just dirty trans. oil. New oil & filter only lasted a day and was clogged again with clutch material. In both cases any shudders or odd noised were gone with the old converter.
