Question: Transmission problems

On occasion my transmission will fail in two major ways. One way is when I am putting the car in reverse to park, it will not engage the gear, then putting back into drive will still not engage. The second is sometimes the transmission will not shift into higher gears. Both these issues are immediately corrected when I turn the car off and restart it.

I have not noticed any pattern to these problems and they occur two to three times a month.

Whenever I work on a vehicle with this type of intermittent issue, the first thing i do is make sure that the transmission and engine control modules have the latest software available. A weird software bug can cause this and it is extremely hard to diagnose, almost impossible. So get that checked and have the shop check for any service bulletins regarding shifting problems too.
