1998 Mercury Grand Marquis Question: transmission not engaging in drive

The only thing you can really do without a diagnosis and potential repairs is to service the transmission. This means not only change the fluid in the pan and replace the filter, but also flush out the fluid in the lines and through the torque converter as well.
Once you change out all this fluid and the filter, you will have an accurate assessment of what is in the pan that may be debris from mechanical issues.
