Vehicles with a 6speed automatic transmission may develop one or more of the following faults related to a broken 35R clutch wave plate inside the transmission: Illumination of the Check Engine Light with code P0716, P0776, P0717, P0777, P2714, P2715, and/or P02723, loss of reverse gear, slipping or harsh 3rd or 5th gear shift. Removal and dis-assembly of the transmission will be required to replace the broken 35R wave plate. It is also extremely important that all debris from the failed part be cleaned from the transmission while it is disassembled in order to try and prevent future problems.

Last week my transmission failed on my 09 Malibu. "No Reverse/ 3rd or 5th Gear, DTC P0776". I am 10 months out of power train warranty. GM has been contacted and may or may not assist with a partial payment of the repair cost. Any suggestions on how to approach this matter further.

My car was driving good than all of a sudden it wouldn't reverse... I'm confused cause I'm 8months pregnant and needs a rode to my appointments. My car also has a recall on it ..so do the dealer have to pay for this or I do cause I need to know.
My car goes in reverse and does not go forward. The opposite but seem like the same issues.

Car was fine, parked it in the driveway.Next time I tried to use it, it wouldn't go in reverse.Then other gears went. Very upset. Looks like this is an ongoing problem costing loyal customers alot of money. Is GM doing anything to help?
No reverse. Trans needed to be rebuilt. Main shaft badly scored needing replacing. NO TRANS DIP STICK FROM FACTORY TO SHOW FLUID LEVEL. Wave plate broken in three pieces. Fluid dark and burned looking. Repairman stated this is an ongoing problem with the General Motors 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Vehicle wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear and RPMs were very high. Dealer said that the wave plate broke and damaged the speed sensor. They wanted $2100 to replace both. I was upset and said I was going to take it somewhere else. Then they said $1100 to do the repair with a used wave plate. The part new only costs $20. I hate GM products and the customer service is terrible. They were willing to take $1000 off and say they could do that if they used an old part. That makes no sense when its an inexpenisve part even when bought new. My research revealed that the Chinese wave plate used in the late 2000's is faulty and explodes once it gets brittle from heat. Why no recall? Don't buy GM. I'm still arguing with the dealer about this.

Same issue. Faulty wave plate. GM needs to stand up and take care of this for their loyal owners. Im very disappointed and will not buy another. Ive owned 2 Toyotas and never had a tranny issue.
Vehicle started jerking and RPMs all over. Car would not reverse. Mechanic found it had no reverse, no first gear, lots of noise in second gear. Transmission failed. There were NO check engine lights on however transmission shop pulled the following codes p0621, p0700, p0776, b1325, u0155. They determined that the wave plate broke and the broken pieces fell into the planetary gear set causing damage to that. They replaced wave plate, planetary gear set, and torque converter, overhaul of transmission. Cost just under $3000. Transmission shop contacted GM to make sure there was no recall due to low mileage on vehicle and that it was well taken care of.....GM stated they are aware of the issue and are "close" to issuing a recall. I don't want to hold my breath on that but I would love a refund. GM customer service is terrible and will never buy another vehicle from them. The shop also told me that an SUV by GM which has the same transmission (only larger) had same problems and had already been recalled.

Clutch wave plate won't go In reverse
the problem has not been fixed I just purchased the care and thats the first thing I noticed it jerked really bad when changing gears and it was hard to get out of park and the lights do not show up

Transmission got stuck in the 1 st gear and check engine light came on after tri to the gas station it has been slipping 2 and 3 shift for few months. Vehicle under warranty towed to the dealer who determined wave plate needs to be replaced. Dealer is currently working on in, should be repaired in couple days.

Driving down the road at 20mph and the transmission started slipping. Pulled over a block later. No reverse and will only go into 1st gear. Turns out the wave plate is broken and I'll need to replace the entire transmission due to metal debris that went into the transmission. I bought the car at 72000mi and never made it to my 1st oil change. Thanks GM. I've been a loyal Chevy owner since 1999, but this will be the last one I ever buy!

At the time this happens to my 2011 chevy Malibu it caused excessive damage to the extent the transmission was rebuilt. Now, 50,000 miles later it's doing the same thing. It's out of warranty and falls on my lap even though it was just rebuilt a little more than a year ago.

Car would no longer shift into reverse. Brought it to dealer where it was purchased. They indicated repairs to sensors are needed before they could even determine fully what exactly was needed with the transmission. Possibly a new transmission would be needed. GM was contacted and told they would cover 60% of cost since car is just outside power train warranty.

I have a 2010 malibu. It had 61k miles when the issue happened. Car would not shift into 3rd gear and reverse would not work as well... When put in reverse car would shake violently. When in drive 1st and 2nd gears worked but 3rd wouldn't.... if I got it to switch into third it would lose power/grip and engine would rev high without moving the car... sometime I could make it skip into 4th gear but it wouldn't switch into 5th.... Basically 3rd, 5th, and reverse were broken. I was out of warranty and had to cover repairs myself. I took the risk of buying a used 2012 MH8 Transmission with 20k miles and swapped it in. I went with a 2012 because I know it has the updated clutch waved plate. I was worried it wouldn't fit because it was newer and had a different "id" on the sticker. Junk yards would tell me I needed to ask the dealer which id I had and go with that. My car is 2010 so it would have a 2010 id... I didn't want another 2010 tranny that would potentially break again. So I just picked one of the 2012 id they had and told the people at the junk yard that I needed a 2012 transmission with the id I picked. I was finally able to buy one for $550 and I had a ship swap it in for $940. It worked and it fit with no issues. The computer modules had no issues communicating or being updated with the latest calibrations. In the end the risk paid off. I paid $1,490 for the swap all in all. GM SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THESE VEHICLES AND COVERED THE REPAIRS BECAUSE ITS THEIR DESIGN FLAW!
