Transmission Fault and/or Check Engine Light With Code P0716, P0776, P0717, P0777, P2714, P2715, and/or P02723 on Chevrolet Traverse

Problem Description and Possible Solution

Vehicles with a 6speed automatic transmission may develop one or more of the following faults related to a broken 35R clutch wave plate inside the transmission: Illumination of the Check Engine Light with code P0716, P0776, P0717, P0777, P2714, P2715, and/or P02723, loss of reverse gear, slipping or harsh 3rd or 5th gear shift. Removal and dis-assembly of the transmission will be required to replace the broken 35R wave plate. It is also extremely important that all debris from the failed part be cleaned from the transmission while it is disassembled in order to try and prevent future problems.

No warning signs at all, no check engine lights and no symptoms before hand. All of a sudden my wife said the car wouldn't go past 20 mph. She drove it home and swapped cars with me. I noticed no reverse, but could put it into drive and drive it up the flatbed. Took it to a local Tansmission shop and they are taken it apart right now. Pretty sure I need a rebuilt. I won't bring it back to a GM dealer because of a past bad experiences. Basically ripped me off for $500 to replace bad spark plugs. With genuine GM spark plugs that went bad to begin with.
5 year warantee was up in April with only 68,000 miles on it,
Shop told me $2200 for a rebuilt.

Oh Chevy, Traverse LT Model purchased New for $36,000 with all required Dealer services pampered with Highway Miles all of a Sudden at 105,000 Transmission would Rev so bad it sounded like a was driving an airplane at 25-35MPH and 67-80MPH. Ironically after my scheduled Spark Plug Tune Up Service of $525, Took it back to the Dealer said it would be $275 just to diagnose the problem? I was definitely out of 100k warranty, I basically had nothing but Hate towards Myself not purchasing a "Toyota Sequoia". Now at 115,000 miles I find out the 3-5 wave (Basically Transmission plate that affects 3rd and 5th gear) is covered under "Special Service Extended Coverage" up to 120,008 miles but not from a dealership. By Calling Direct Chevrolet 800-222-1020 (Make sure you have your VIN#) start off with recall information then ask CSR about the Problems Associated with your particular Vehicle. I am fortunate to have made the call as My Dealership has done all the continuing Maintenance without any word of Special Service Coverage regarding my vehicle. Yes, I believe they know but only help those who get informed! That is why I am going into detail from my experience to help others who still meet the Mileage Criteria, For those who have passed it without any knowing of the extended coverage I Feel your Pain/Anger. On a positive note the Chevrolet CSR Agent was Helpful in every way possible.
Why is this not a recall yet????? So many listed issues not including people who haven't placed their issues. Mine has had the check engine light on for the 35-r wave plate for a couple of months. The issues come and go but I'm waiting for the day it completely goes. I am unable to place my car into reverse on cold days, I have to park where I can turn my car around. It is a boat so reverse is needed. Also, driving I can hear the struggle from 3rd to 5th gear, some times I will have to pull over cut it off and try again if it wont switch gears just so I don't blow the motor. Other times some prayers and sweet talk my "betsy" will change after I let off the gas and give her a minute. This is dangerous. Please GM recall this 35-r wave plate. (before my transmission goes) Thank you.
Traverse hesitates and skips in low gears.....called GM. At first I thought the timing chain was acting up again. One time, while going up a hill she completely died....everything went dark.(That was timing chain or spark plug issue..so many I can't remeber) If you own an 09, it is covered up to 120,000 mile under "Special Coverage". Call your dealership, as many of them will not tell you when you take it in. If you are an owner of an 09, you should receive a letter from GM soon. There are several items that are covered up to 120k.
This is the fourth "major" issue I have had with this vehicle. We have done the timing chain, spark plugs at $500, timing chain tensioners, and now transmission. On the bright side...2 more payments and she's all mine.Dealership kept car for over a month without giving us a vehicle. GM ended up paying 60 percent of tensioner problem. Total on that was $930.
GM has a lemon on their hands and I think they are trying to help customers, but who would feel right selling these as used vehicles. You will have to call and stay persitant about problems.....believe me, they know this thing has issues. I bought mine new and would not sell it to anyone.From what I hear...Nissan and Ford are both having several transmission problems and are not helping customers with anything.Good luck fellow Traverse owners.
Just purchased a 2009 Chevy treverse 11/29/14, Well, while driving on 95 going SB my vehicle would not go pass 60 mi, then 40 mi, and last stopped at 20 mi. Needless to say it would not go into Reverse neither, so so disappointed. No extended coverage and now I founds out that its no longer covered under Chevy's warranty, as of 12/05/2014. The dealer ship did NOT inform me of this at all. In fact, telling me that I was still covered under Chevy's warranty. With only 26,876 mi on this vehicle at the time of purchase. Now, my truck sits because I cannot afford the transmission repair of almost $3000.00 dollars. Sickening because I'm now stuck with a useless vehicle and a car note. My prayers goes out to everyone who's going through similar situations. GM really needs to do a recall on these transmissions. Hopefully, these reviews will be picked up by the News and social media to put some fire under the feet of the CEO of GM. Especially when my two kids were stuck on 95 in a vehicle that should've NEVER been released on the market.
started shifting hard out of 3rd and 5th gear then check engine light came on. Codes where P0700 and P0716 took it to the dealership and they said it was the 3-5-R waveplate. It was covered under the powertrain warrenty
The car acted like it had a little issue shifting 2 days ago. No warning lights came on and I went to go shopping today 5 miles from my house and it completely died and the warning light came on stating my transmission was over heating. I will contact the dealership regarding this issue
So I am leasing a 2016 Chevy Traverse LT. Picked it up in November 2015 and on January 19th. The transmission went in the middle of a very busy intersection. I was able to drive the car (At 5 mph) back to my work and have it towed to the dealership I leased it from 6 weeks prior. Currently 1 week later "We are still unable to locate the part needed to fix it". I do have a rental from Enterprise Rental for which the dealer will pay for however I'm not sure I actually want the car back. I drive around all weekend taking my kids to and from practices and this better not re-occur. Again the car has 1,862 miles on it. Very disappointed..
Same as noted. Slipping while backing up. The Check light came on many times I had the dealer look at it and was told there was no problem. Now that the warranty is up and the problem is so noticeable they know what the problem is but it's now my out of pocket cost.
Got my 2009 Chevy Traverse from Rick Hendricks in January 20015 Transmission wasn't working probably so I went to Rick Hendricks mechanic shop in Feb. They said there was nothing wrong with the transmission. Months later in May they had to fix it because the transmission went out. My question is, what do I do now that my transmission is slipping once again?
Transmission. Loss of power. Will not shift.
My traverse won't shift n 3 or 5 or go into reverse me n my six kids were stranded due to this n may I say I won't own another
The problem accrued on my wife's lunch break. She was running an errand when se called me and said she lost al low end power. Was not able to get up to speed fast. Check engine light came on and that was that. She made it back to work we're I picked it up and drove straight to the dealership. Had two codes in it from the transmission. One was the speed sensor at $465 dollars to replace before they could check the transmission. Wow. Finally after a day and a half I had a quote for 2-3k to rebuild the transmission and 4,100 to get a new one with a three year warranty. It only has 83,000 miles. I owe 6,500 still on the car. I purchased it three years ago with 32,000 on it and payed for the extra warranty up to 80,000.

Just want to put this out to everyone else. Still don't know what I'm going to do.

My wife reported a hard slam feeling several times but each time I drove the 2013 Chevy Traverse I could not get anything to happen until one night going out for dinner I went to pull into a parking spot and needed to back up and when I shifted back into D it felt as though someone rear ended us. It literally jerked our heads like a whiplash. Now I am reading all the problems others are having. I have not had any codes yet on the dash. I drove to Dallas and back with my wife's car this weekend and it only did it once so it is very difficult to diagnose.
Had to buy brand new tranmission it was 4500.00 had it service may 28/2015 ran good no drive no revce no speed .call gm they said they was nothing they could do.gave me numberwhat wr all need to do is call this number national highway traffic saftey adminstration declars recall 1888-3274236 turn them in my car quit going down the road some one will get in wreck or kill
Exactly what was stated in intro, just got it back.
Transmission just stop shifting, dealership said I need a new transmission at the cost of$4600. It did the same thing a month ago and they changed the strainer and fluid and it ran like normal.
Engine started shifting a bit rough. My local mechanic pulled code P2715. I had him hold off on repairs thinking it may be the 3-5-R issue. Took it to my dealer who said they could not replicate the problem and couldn't get a code since my mechanic had done it (even though I told them the code).

The very next day, car starts acting worse and even revs up as it is trying to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Eventually would not shift to 3rd gear. Also, lost reverse a couple of times.

This issue was intermittent, but was getting worse. Back to my local mechanic thinking I am stuck paying for a tranny work. He pulls the code and this time comes up with P0776. He said it is a the 3-5-R wave plate! I talk to GM Customer Service listed on my service bulletin (1-800-204-8151) and they recommend I take it to another Chevy Dealer. That appt has been made and hopefully this issue gets fixed. The GM CSR started a file for me and we'll see where it goes.

Please, please, please be the only issue. I like this vehicle, but am starting to get worried about issues. We also had the timing chains replaced under warranty around 40,000.
Trouble shifting and gears seemingly sticking , causing a hard jolt when gear shift into next gear. Happens mostly when driving up hill or slowing then accelerating.
