What is a Transmission control Unit and how can I repair this when it malfunctions?

It is the computer that controls your transmission. It can be reprogrammed or often it needs to be replaced. Why do you ask?

4wd low light on and will not shift past third gear.

my 2003 Sorento is doing the same thing. I had two engine fault codes. Kia Forum advised: OK this is either a faulty 4 wheel drive low switch or P1795 indicates that the TCM received invalid throttle plate position data from the PCM for 2 seconds. The possible causes are TCM may need to be replaced to repair this trouble code. The engine control module (ECM) sends throttle plate position data to the transmission control module (TCM). The data is sent to the TCM through a communication network called the controller area network (CAN). Replace the TCM.These are the most common causes and need to be checked next.
