1998 Dodge Durango Question: Transmission/ changed fluid but belive wrong fluid in stalled

MY son changed the filter & fluid in his 1998 durango an it has a 42re trans an he is haveing shifting problems in frist gear the fluid looks brown what my i do to corret this problem. anthe bands were not ajusted with this change

    First of all if he just replaced the fluid and filter the fluid should not be brown already, as a matter of fact a properly functioning trans will have still red fluid even after 30k miles. It sounds like there may be some sever wear already, which itself could be causing bad shifts. Second there have been no "bands" in automatic transmissions since like the dark ages. I think you really should get the trans. looked at.

    you must be a dumbass because a band adjustment is recommended every 25,000 miles..one band is on the outside on the driver side and the other is in the pan.You need an inch torque wrench to tighten the bands then back them out an exact amount.the outside band will require a universal joint so set the torque wrench 3lbs higher to offset the universal joint.I don't have exact band specs but you must use atf +4 and 2 lucas transmission additives will help the transmission immensely. The previous dumbass is talking about newer transmissions not a 42re.Ihad one with bad shifting and I did the bands and 2 lucas additives and I have over 204,000 miles.Hopes this helps and join DodgeForums.com...
