I towed my Honda CRV 2 wheel drive auto transmission, from central Florida to central Texas,I followed the book on how to tow the vehicle, I drove around about 600 milies while in Texas, and the trannie worked fine.I towed the vehicle back to Florida, but when I arrived , I found the transmission, was totally trashed,at no time did I shift the transmission out of neutral, while towing or anytime upon leaving Texas. Why did the transmission burn up

I found this procedure on another forum , . Before towing starts for the day (and every 8 hours thereafter) start the car and run in Neutral or Park for at least three minutes. Before shutting the engine off cycle the shifter through gears to 1st and then back to neutral. This is to insure that you DO NOT shift from Reverse to Neutral and tow as Honda says tranny damage will occur. Turn key to "Engine Off" position which leaves steering axle unlocked. (Manual says not to exceed 65 MPH while towing and I usually do not but have noticed no problems when it has happened.)
