Transmission on 1998 Chevrolet Astro

If you have the van in neutral and you tow from the rear will it damage the transmission

If you mean "picking up the rear of the van (rear wheels off the ground)" to tow it- no it won't hurt the transmission. If the van is all-wheel-drive (which some astro vans were), it needs to be put on a rollback (flatbed) towtruck.
