The transmission in your 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport used a vacuum modulator valve located on the front side of the transmission. If the engine vacuum is disconnect from the modulator the transmission will shift late and very firm - most noticeable on the shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Locate the modulator and follow the vacuum hoses and pipe up to the intake manifold and make sure everything is connected correctly and there are no vacuum leaks to the modulator.
