1997 BMW 740iL Question: Transmission
Answer #1Bret Bodas from RepairPal Test Shop, July 15, 2009, 08:14Master
When the transmission control module registers a problem, it will put the transmission into a fail safe mode, often referred to as "limp-home" mode. This allows a minimal amount of operation of the transmission so that you can get your vehicle off the road and to a safe place, and it helps to prevent any further damage to the transmission.
