how do you check the transmission fluid on a 2004 vw passat

did extensive research. Drop atf oil from plug under the tranny. about 3 l should come out. On top look for a red cap to the left of the battery close to the front engine. Under this cap which breaks off, you will find a plug . Take plug off carefully and with a tube and funnel, funnel 3.5 leters of the correct ATF. This is extremely impt. They say Mercron V syn works as good as VW spec. Change a few times in a few months to get most of the worn oil out. VW wants 230.00 for one change of 3.0 lt so not worth it. VW wants you to buy a new car often so thay say the ATF is good for the life of the car. Don't believe it
