my 1998 ford contour doesn't go into first(automatic)

First check your transmission fluid level. Your owner's manual should show the correct way, typically in the maintenance section. Is the level ok? Does the fluid smell burnt? If you need to add fluid, the manual should also say the correct type of automatic transmission fluid (ATF). It might say Dexron/Mercon or something like that
