Water could have damaged the shift lock mechanism if it got inside the shifter housing. This will need to be inspected to know for sure. One thing you can do is make sure the brake lights are working, if not, the shift lock may not function properly and you wont be able to take it out of park.

If the entire gear shift display is highlighted the transmission is in limp mode. The transmission control module is mounted under the carpet on the passenger side. It is probably wet........

If your sun roof drains are clogged or cracked then the water floods the passenger side floor. Then the transmission control module gets flooded, because its under the carpet that flooded, the transmission goes into limp mode and ultimately shorts out the contro module. The module sells for $1400 plus labor by the way. So this is a 2 grand issue for the cosumer for a poor design. This is a known problem on Passats and VW, I think, had a repair campaign for it, but not a recall that I can find.
