Southeast Toyota is recalling certain vehicles because the seat heater element may become damaged as a result of compression of the seat cushion. The damaged element could short causing burning of the seat cushion, increasing the risk of personal injury. Dealers will disconnect seat heaters with copper strand elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory to correct this concern.
2009 Toyota Tacoma Recalls
The steering column assembly contains electrical connections for the driver's airbag, commonly called the "clock spring". This spiral cable assembly includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned. If the FFC is damaged, the driver's airbag could be deactivated. The failure of the driver's airbag to deploy when required increases the risk of injury to the driver. When the parts are available, dealers will replace the spiral cable assembly to correct this concern.
If the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed, over time the screws attaching the seat belt pre-tensioner to the seat belt retractor can loosen. If the screws loosen completely, the seat belt pre-tensioner and the retractor spring cover could detach from the seat belt retractor. If this were to occur the seat belt pre-tensioner will not perform as designed, increasing the risk of injury in a severe crash. Dealers will inspect the seat belt assembly and the screws will be secured or the seat belt assembly will be replaced as necessary.
Over time, vibration of the steering wheel while driving may damage the spiral cable assembly (clockspring). This is the electrical connection between the driver's airbag and the vehicle wiring harness. If damage occurs, the airbag warning lamp will illuminate and the driver's airbag may become deactivated. In the event of a crash, the driver's airbag may not deploy as expected, increasing the risk of personal injury. Dealers will replace the clockspring assembly to correct this concern.
Due to a calibration error, the tire pressure monitoring system warning light may not illuminate to warn of incorrect tire pressure. Driving with the incorrect tire pressure can result in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will re-initialize the tire pressure monitoring system to restore proper operation. Toyota has not provided a notification schedule at this time.
These vehicle were sold without the required load carrying captivity modification label. Dealers will mail the corrected label to vehicle owners. Owners have the option of requesting that the dealer install the label. This recall is expected to begin on May 27, 2010.
Southeast Toyota is recalling 2005–2011 models for failing to comply with federal safety standards on tire selection and rims. Affected models were sold without the proper load-carrying capacity modification labels, which may cause the driver to overload the vehicle, increasing the chance of a crash. Dealers will mail the correct labels to the customer or install the label free of charge.
Toyota is recalling 2004–2010 models for an accelerator pedal that can get stuck in the wide open position due to problems with the floor mat. This may cause high vehicle speeds that make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which can result in a crash. In order to correct the problem, dealers will replace the pedals, alter the shape of the floor, and/or replace the floor mats. Toyota will also modify software on certain models to ensure that the brake overrides the accelerator in the event that both are applied.
The load carrying capacity modification label may be missing from the vehicle. This information provides maximum load carrying weights as well as information about required tires and wheels. If not present, an inappropriate load may be carried in the vehicle, increasing a safety risk. Toyota has supplied customers with a new label to affix to the vehicle. This recall began on August 18, 2009.
