I bought the 2005 Camry in November, 2005. At 50,981 miles (November 2008) I put $500 in replacing the intermediate steering shaft because their technician noted the problem when I went in for a routine oil change. I learned later that there was an advisory sent out to the dealers on this issue. Now I go in for another routine oil change and they tell me I need to replace a loose left inner rack on the power steering. That's going to cost me another $500. That's putting $1,000 into clearing up a faulty manufacturing issue which may put my life or others on the road, at risk.

I have a 1990 Camry that is leaking water from a pin hole on the block near where the alternator bracket bolts to the engine block. It looks to be a bleed hole of some sort, not just a hole in the block. The coolant weeps out even when the engine is not running, but streams out while running.

I have been leaking coolant (little bit each day) for awhile and one mechanic said the water pump was leaking slightly, and I just replaced the pump, thermostat, timing belt, hoses, belt about 1-2 years back. When I start the car, until it warms up, it makes a slight ratling sound then seems to stop after its warmed up alittle, but coming home last night, the rattling sound got worse and worse, and then the engine just went dead and all engine lights came on. Now I crank the engine and it refuses to start at all. Where I pulled over, it was obvious that the leak had gotten worse as there was a very visable trail of water (I think it was water, no smell) from the street to where I parked.

While traviling on I57, my car's front end began to vibrate. It felt like it was in the left wheel area. It got worse everytime I took my foot of the accel pedal. Braking seemed to make it worse but just slowing down makes it worse. Putting in neutral did not make a difference. Downshifting did not make a difference. Took it to shop who replaced badly corroded and pitted alloy wheel and rotor and put spare on. No more vibration for shop test and my ride home. On drive back to get my car at shop, it started shaking again and again worse on deceleration. Shop said he saw cv shaft "hopping" a little while testing, but since road test was good, did not think cv was cause of shaking. I injected grease and penetrant into left inner and outer bearings through boot and now no shake while accel or cruise but on deceleration it starts to rap. I feel it through the accel pedal linkage in the floor board, I also hear a clunking on deceleration. I jacked up left side and turned wheel back and forth and there is freeplay of about an inch or so but it seems that all parts of the shaft are moving together and the slop seems to be in the differential. Bought the car (my dream car..)2 months ago, 89 thousand miles, one owner, wonderfully maintained, everything checked out etc etc....no problems, runs great etc..
2 mornings ago (temp outside 37)after starting car, the check engine light came on and stayed on. took the car to local mechanic who dx'd the code. he then removed the code to see if it would happen again (in case it was a fluke). today after driving 2 miles and turning car off and restarting, the light came on and stayed on.
mechanic says the code means -
1. open or short circuit condition
2. poor electrical connection
3. failed ssv (u?) DSL
something about the solenoid (sp)possibly, transmission?
I called a toyota dealership and they said they'd charge $650.00 and replace the solenoid (sp) in the transmission, wouldn't guarantee that would be the problem and said instead of having that solenoid replaced..just drive it and see if the transmission (as it could be falling apart)is slowly falling apart.
The car has no symptoms at all, I just got rid of a 1986 oldsmobile which through the past years started falling expensively apart (tho was a good car for many many years).

the car worked perfectly last night. This morning the lights were working but the car wouldn't start. I had the car jumped and let it idle for 20 minutes. The car looked and sounded normal.

after 20 minutes i turned the car off and tried to restart it. the ignition clicked over and over again, but the engine did not start. all the lights worked at this point.

I checked the fuses and did a visual inspection of the wires and spark plugs without finding any problems. the battery cables were connected properly.

the battery is about five years old. Can a battery suddenly stop holding a charge? there were no warning signs that the battery was about to fail pior to this problem. If the problem is the starter then why did the car start when i had it jumped? if the alternator is the problem why didn't the car start after being jumped and then slowly run down as the battery was drained? After it was jumped the igniton just clicked even though the lights worked.

I have a 99 Camry with a 2.2 I4. I was thinking about doing some routine maintenace such as changing the differential fluid and the transmission fluid. The differential fluid has never been changed. Can you tell me which kind would be the best and how much of it I would need (some people tell me that if I change the trans. fluid, it automatically changes the fluid in the differential also, is that true? I do have to change the trans. and differential fluid seperately, right?). As for the Transmission fluid, I recently changed the fluid including filter and gasket about five thousand miles ago. Is it time to change it again? If I do, is it a good idea to start using synthetic trans. fluid? My last question is that I am having some idle trouble which occurs ONLY at startup sometimes. It has become more common especially in the summer. As soon as I would start my engine, the engine would start and then idle down to about 200 RPM (it usually is around 800 RPM). Then, if I give it some gas, it becomes normal. I have done the tune-up which included the wires, plugs, fuel filter, pcv valve, and air filter (all TOYOTA parts). Is it the IAC valve? I just had all four struts replaced. The first estimate was $1600 for all struts (independent shop). I balked, and then they called back and said they could do it for $1200. They said it's not just the struts, but coils and stablilizer links that were needed that increased the cost, (I had a quote of $900 for just the struts replaced). Desperate for my car, I let them do the job, and it does ride smoother, with less sway, and a little easier over these endless potholes in Ohio. I reviewed the invoice and see that they replaced the struts with Quick Struts. Researching tonight on the web, am I interpreting it correctly that the coil is part of the Quick Strut? (Part numbers: PPCTST100016, 17 for the front, and PPCST100012, 15 for the back). The invoice says they removed the old coils and put them on the new struts. the cooling part works well, i.e.: tested the pressure its perfect, and inside the cab the ac puts out very cold air. the problem: it works intermittently, i.e., with the ac button pushed in and the fan on the ac works fine for a while, maybe 5, 10 mins then starts to warm up. at the same time two things happen,l. the ac button light begins to flash instead of just staying on, and 2. the battery symbol indicator light ont the dash comes on, but this doesnt happen every time. however if i turn the ac off and then restart, the battery symbol goes away, the ac works for a moment, then gets warm, and the ac light flashes instead of staying steadily lit. lastly, if i hold the ac button in and keep it depressed then the ac will work. im thinking its an electrical problem with a relay or solenoid or pressure switich indicator. i really dont think the problem has anything to do with the freon, compressor, or radiator as... i recently purchased for my wife a used 2003 4-cyl Camry, a/t, 125000 miles, from a toyota dealer. Nice car. After a couple weeks, the check-engine light came on. I got out my Actron OBD II code scanner, which i used to retrieve a P0420 DTC. I researched that DTC on the internet and found out it is a "catalytic converter not performing to spec" issue. I erased the code, and it has not returned in the month since then. I dropped by the toyota dealer to discuss the issue w/ a service tech, who told me that altho i could replace the catalytic converter myself, i would still need to bring it by to them so that they can "recalibrate the computer" after the new catalytic converter has been installed. Back in the 60s and 70s, i had A LOT of experience working on VW Bugs, rebuilding Bug engines, even once rebuilt a VW bug standard transmission. So i like to think i know a little bit about auto mechanics. But back then, VW Bugs did not have catalytic converters, much less onboard computers. So i need to know: on MODERN cars, do you need to recalibrate the onboard computer whenever you replace the catalytic converter? or is this something particular to Toyotas? I have both the Chilton AND the Haynes shop manuals for this car, and neither one of them mentions any such requirement. One further note: I found a TSB for this car on the internet, Toyota TSB EG024-04, relative the onboard computer and P0420 DTCs, but the tech at the dealar ... More

I had the oil changed at a quick lube place. About 10 min after I left the engine shut off at a stop light. I started it up again to get through the intersection and it shut off again. Coasted to a safe place and checked the oil; it did not register on the dip stick, and oil was pooled around the front of the engine. Called the oil change place and they sent someone out. He raised the car and discovered that the seal on the oil filter had failed.

Replacing old brake pad to new ones, do I do the same procedure, when putting them back ... pushing the piston back or do I have to bleed them? On non ABS I just push the piston without bleeding not so sure about ABS BRAKES. PLEASE HELP .....
