2000 Toyota Tacoma Question: tough oil filter removal

Question

Visitor, 2.4L 4 Cylinder, Antioch, CA, February 14, 2011, 15:17

OIL CHANGE EVERY 6 MONTHS. I'M HAVING A HARD TIME REMOVING MY OIL FILTER MORE AND MORE EACH TIME. I HAND TIGHT IT AND THEN USE MY OIL WRENCH ABOUT TWO SMALL HAND TURNS NOT FULL TURNS. WHERE THEY (TOYOTA) HAS PLACED THE OIL FILTER ON THIS MODEL WHEN SLIDING UNDER THE TRUCK THERE IS NOT MUCH ROOM TO PUT OIL FILTER WRENCH ON. 1 INCH CLEARANCE TO TIGHTEN OR UNTIGHTEN OIL FILTER REAL FRUSTRATION EVERY TIME. WHY DID THEY DO THAT? ANY WAY! I NOTICE THERE IS A PLUG JUST ABOVE THE OIL FILTER HOUSING. IF I OPEN THAT PLUG AFTER I DRAIN THE OIL, WILL THAT RELIEVE THE OIL PRESSURE ON THE OIL FILTER, MAKING IT EASIER TO REMOVE THE OIL FILTER.

When putting the new filter on you DO NOT use a wrench. Only hand tighten. Several vehicles are difficult to change the oil filter because the engines are used in so many applications. Just take your time.

Hal is correct when he states not to use a oil filter wrench to install the new filter. The filter should only be hand tighten and then 1/4 turn. Here at our repair center all techs. are told to pre-lube the new oil filter seal.
