replaceing the timmimg belt is that something someone with a little automotive knowledge should try if so do any have instructions.

Yes, but first get the repair manual, I suggest an online subscription from alldatadiy.com, read up on the job, make sure you have all the parts and tools, leave yourself more time than you think you'll need and if you feel comfortable at that point, do it!
There are some sites that sell a timing belt kit with all the parts, instructions and even rent the tools needed to do the job. (timingbeltkit.com is one of them)
