timing chain tensioner removal on 1995 Nissan Maxima

I have a 1995 nissan maxima /v6 3000 i need to repace the waterpmp. I have it tore apart but i cant get the tensioner pidton bsck far enough to install stop pin. can i just remove the tensioner and then put it back or is there going to be all kinds of issues if i do so. also i didnt remove the front timing chain cover. do i need to in order to replace the waterpump. any special tools needed? any info on this matter would be greatly appreciated, and my wife would be sooooo happy. thanks nin advance. On your 95 v6 maxima you can remove the chain tensioner.(Trying to compress it while its in the car is like arm wrestling king kong) Be careful not to let the chain move on any teeth. (it most likley wont) put the tensioner in a vice or use vice grips to compress it and lock it down witha pin and re-install it. once removed turn the crank pully backwards 20 degrees and your chain will come right off the water pump... Remove the 3 bolts holding in the water pump and I usually just grab and pull it tward the body and bam. Email me with any questions.. Dbeeme@yahoo.com Dan The Man
