I have a clattering sound on my 1997 BMW 540i when accelerating it does it when hot or cold. No sound when running stedy at highway speeds 70 - 100 but when accelerating it starts again I replaced the plugs and changed the oil also the fuel filter nothing is helping to rid the noise also cleaned the MAF Sensor motor has 130+ miles starts great runs strong.

Really need to do the whole chain at this mileage, the noise is also because the timing Chain is stretched. On 4.0 liter BMW V8s the chains wear out, I have personally been involved with a few, that is also why I only use Mobil One synthetic oil, because the Timing Chains last MUCH longer. The Chain is a huge job, book time starts at 23 hours and then there are other things to do. Best of Luck, a BMW can be costly to maintain.
