On this 2.3l engine, there is a Cam Sprocket, Crank Sprocket and the Intermediate Shaft Sprocket (which turns the distributor shaft and rotor). When the Crank is set at TDC, the Cam Sprocket mark will be about 5:30. All bolts you are working on will be right-hand thread.

FORD WAS USING A DISTRIBUTOR ON THIS ENGINE IN THE LATE 80'S BUT NOW USE A CAM POSITION SENSOR INSTEAD.

actually you just making yourself look stupid because the mechanic is right it is the crankshaft synchronizer and the camshaft position sensor it is called a p distributorless ignition system (DIS) just thought I'd throw that out there before you go and make yourself look like a retard in front of other people and everything he said by the way is actually pretty helpful if you knew what you were talking about

3RD GEAR IS DISTRIBUTOR SHAFT. BOLT IS RIGHT HAND THREAD. CAM GEAR DOT TO POINTER.
WRONG! Wet Fry, it is YOU who needs to find a repair guide or a buddy! The 3rd Gear is NOT a distributor shaft! It is an Intermediate Shaft Sprocket. The Distributor Shaft is driven by the Intermediate Shaft. The Camshaft Sprocket mark aligns with the pointer at 5:30.
