I was told I will need a new engine for a timing belt that broke - is that true? What are my options.

you do not need a new engine but they will have to take the whole front end off of the vehicle to change the timing belt which is going to really cost you!

you may need a new engine. Jettas have an interference engine, and the valves are very close to the pistons. If the timing belt broke when the valves were open, you could cause some serious damage to the valves and/or the pistons. It may make more sense to drop another engine in it than replace all these parts
