Day-Day February 06, 2009, 08:11ReplyRookieYes you should have your timing belt changed every 100,000 to 150,000 miles because they start to wear out and become week, its better to change it out before it breaks because if it does break then repair costs to fix your engine are going be quite high, due to anything from a bent valve(S) to a shattered piston(S) or damaged head. If I were you I would change it out asap and not risk it, also youre going to need a new water pump and timing belt tensioner(S) and spring(S) this would cost anywhere from 100 to 500 at the most for the parts depending on your engine as far as the labor goes.. thats up to who ever does it for you, prices are high but its better than having to buy a new engine

Visitor, November 20, 2010, 01:33I'm sure they do. As a mechanic, as much as I like your money, I could not in good conscience recommend a timing belt at this time. It is really more of a mileage thing; based on the average driver going 15,000 miles a year. You are CLEARLY not that driver. This is the same advice I would give my Mother. Having said that, unless you have x-ray vision, you cannot tell the condition of the timing belt. Having said THAT, unless the accessory belt(s) have indications of cracking/dryness, etc, you are probably o.k., as timing belts really generally fail due to wear and/or oil leaks. (Ozone is also a factor.) It is a fairly expensive maintenance item, but much less expensive than if it DOES fail- i.e., internal engine damage. Hope this helps.
