1996 Volkswagen Cabrio Question: Timing Belt and engine type

Question

96Cabrio, 2.0L 4 Cylinder, Richmond, VA, November 09, 2010, 09:20
 Rookie

The timing belt in my 96 VW cabrio broke and I'm trying to decide if it's worth fixing. Can anyone tell me if it is an interference or non-interference engine?
Thanks

My reference show that it's an interference engine. Very likely there's significant internal damage to the engine. You may do well to check out a guaranteed used engine and put a new timing belt and water pump on it before it goes into the car.
