I have a 2005 jetty 20 ltr with 100,200 miles. At a german car specialist I was quoted a price of $680 for the timing belt replacement and $550 for the alternator harness replacement. Is this a fair price? The dealer told me to replace the timing belt at 90K and they would chage over $800 for the job.

Yes, it seems to be the correct price.
The replacement interval on the 2003 and up is 80,000 miles, so you are way overdue.
Do it as soon as possible, otherwise you will end up doing a $$$$$ valve job.

Thanks for your feedback Zee. I am glad to hear that this pricing is reasonable. Yes this is really overdue - I have had to do several repairs throughout this year so this was def. next on the list. My AC stopped working as well and the fuses were a bit corroded along with a corroded alternator harness. With a total bill of $1200+ projected for today, I just wanted to know that I wasn't being ripped off as I sit here for hours while my car is being repaired.

I am currently sitting at the shop now waiting and I just wanted to see if anyone had any input or feedback while my car was in que ;o). Luckily they offer free wi-fi while you wait!

Do you have the exact list of what they are going to replace?

    replacement of the alternator harnes
the three fuses in the casing next to the harness
    replacement of the timing belt
    A/C coolant replacement
    parts
    labor
    tax
I don't have the specific list in hand, but when we went over the estimate, these were the services I agreed on. I am not sure if there are some other things within those services that will be done too, if that makes any sense.

The technician also said that their warrenty on the service was 15,000 miles

I just wonder if they do replace the water pump and the timing belt tensioner?
It should be in the t-belt service.

I will definitely ask that as well thanks! If when I get the run down of services performed and that was not included, what should I do. Is there anything else I should look out for when I get the final list?

Lastly, would you recommend purchasing an extended warrenty on this vehicle? I average about 15-16K miles a year with mainly highway miles. My commute every day is 60 miles round trip for work. if so, are there any companies you recommend?

They should definitely advise you to replace those components, usually they price those in the estimate. This price should include those components.
The problem is, it's hard to find a good extended warranty company who covers vehicles over 100K miles. Most who does are crooks and decline everything when it comes to repair.
They also won't cover regular maintenance.
If you post an e-mail I'll send you some info that you might want to consider.

    ok the final repairs were:
    changed freon and coolant
replacement of the following: cam seal, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, serpentine belt, battery fuse box and fuses, and alternator harness. The final bill was $1221.58. email is danishkitty@gmail.com

Ok, actually they did everything they supposed to for a very good price - for all these you can give them a good rating in the shop directory.
I'll put my thoughts together about extended warranty, services and suggestions about your vehicle and e-mail it to you possible Sunday evening, unfortunately I need to go out of town right now.
