1995 Ford Escort

Question: Timing Belt???

Question

Visitor, 1.9L 4 Cylinder, Apex, NC, February 21, 2011, 18:40

Escort stopped on the highway. Turns over but won't start. Was running fine before this. Could it be the timing belt? How much to replace it and what else needs to be done at the same time?

It could be the timing belt but I would not jump to conclusions with out checking for spark and fuel first. If it is the timing belt that broke the engine will crank over "quicker" like an engine that is not developing compression. If the belt is being replaced the water pump, tensioner and oil seals should be replaced. The 1.9L is an interference engine and bends valves if the T/belt breaks.

The 1995 1.9L is not a interference engine . This has been stated many times but came about from amisprint in a gates manual.
