timeing adjustment after distributer replacment

replaced bottom half of distributer now have spark to engine !!!still wont fire,have strong smell of gas,plenty of spark, dont have any codes,cant afford any goodies, kinda old school laern as i go could timeing be off?can i adjust ??

Absolutely, if you don't line up the number one cylinder at TDC top dead centerOf compression stroke and the distributor bug to the number one plug your could be 180 degrees off even with that! Make sure TDC is on compression stroke check out a Haynes or Chilton's for proper procedure
