Question: the sway bar on the passenger side snapped in 1/2. not the link the actual bar.

The sway bar helps control vehicle roll in a turn. I have seen people drive without a sway bar, but its not really recommended and from a liability standpoint, I would have to say, to have it towed. Excessive vehicle roll, especially when not used to it, can cause the car to become unstable and you could lose control.
