The car has 37k miles.Mechanic says I need an alternator.Am I getting ripped off on 2004 Ford Taurus

Battery died on the car and had the car towed to this mechanic thru AAA. This mechanic has horrible reviews online so I'm worried about getting ripped off. How do I know I really need an alternator? Can I ask to see the diagnostic codes?

ask him to hook up a volt meter to show you if it is charging or not it should charge between 13.8 volts and 14.2 volts
