tail lights and instrument panel lights both went out at the same time. Also, a warning chime comes on when door is opened with engine off.

The tail lamps and instrument lights are on the same fuse. Look at the fuse panel for a blown fuse.

Thanks very much for your reply. However, their are three fuse panels in the car (two inside and one under the hood) and none of them has a fuse for the tail lights or instrumental panel light. Also, the listing of the fuses in each of them from the owners manual shows no fuses for either the tail lights or instrumental panel light. I also tried replacing the headlight switch (which controls the tail lights) and this did not solve the problem. Any other ideas????

Had the same problem begin today on my Olds van. Have you found a solution? I would appreciate any help you could offer.
Try fuse #37 under the hood. It's the one!
