Question: tachometer and speedometer both died but mileage is still tallying.

this is first time this happened and it occurred after we had problem closing the trunk. trunk wouldn't close properly, latch was stuck, so the battery died and we needed to jump start the car.

MasterThis is a very common issue with Dodge Neons. The solution for most of them is to resolder the pins carefully then let the joints cool and put assembly back in dash.
