Subaru Maintenance Procedures - Common Additional Services

Subaru Air Filter Replacement

The air filter accumulates dust and debris and should be replaced to protect the engine and maximize fuel economy. For optimal engine performance and longevity, replace every 1 year or 15,000 miles.

Subaru Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Over time the Cabin Filter(s) will accumulate dirt, pollen and debris which can leak in to the passenger compartment if left unchecked. They should be replaced every year or 15,000 miles.

Subaru Coolant Replacement/Flush

Engine coolant breaks down, gets rusty and becomes contaminated with debris from component wear over time and can cause engine or cooling system damage if not replaced every 2 years or 30,0000 miles.

Subaru Differential Fluid Replacement - Front

Differential fluid breaks down and becomes contaminated with moisture over time and can lead to differential damage from a lack of proper lubrication. It should be replaced every 2 years or 30,000 miles.

Subaru Differential Fluid Replacement - Rear

Differential fluid breaks down and becomes contaminated with moisture over time and can lead to differential damage from a lack of proper lubrication. It should be replaced every 2 years or 30,000 miles.

Subaru Drive Belt(s) Replacement

Drive belts crack and become glazed over time and can squeak or even break. They should be replaced every 45,000 miles.

Subaru Spark Plug Replacement

Spark Plug terminals wear down over time and can lead to engine misfires and increased exhaust emissions. Replace according to the vehicle manufacturers recommended replacement interval.

Subaru Valve Adjustment

On engines with adjustable valves, the valve train clearances can become improper which can lead to engine damage. The valve clearance should be checked and adjusted every 30,000 miles.

Subaru Scheduled Maintenance Parts

In order to run, the engine needs a precise mixture of fuel and air. When outside air is drawn into the engine, the air filter prevents harmful dirt and debris from entering the system.
The alternator belt is a flexible rubber belt driven by the engine to power the alternator. The alternator belt can be the common "V" profile or the more modern flat-ribbed style.
Automatic transmission fluid is a lightweight oil that is used to operate the hydraulic mechanisms in an automatic transmission, provide lubrication, and act as a coolant for the transmission. When new, it's usually a cranberry red color.
Brake fluid is a specially formulated fluid that transmits the pressure generated by the master cylinder to the calipers and/or wheel cylinders when the brake pedal is pressed.
The cabin air filter prevents dust, pollen, and other debris from entering the passenger compartment through the climate control (HVAC) system.
Coolant is the fluid that flows through the engine’s cooling system. Its main purpose is to transfer heat generated by the engine to the radiator so the engine doesn’t overheat.
These belts can be used individually or grouped together as part of the belt/pulley system that is driven by the engine crankshaft to run such items as the air conditioning compressor, alternator, and power steering pump.
Engine oil provides lubrication for all internal moving parts of an engine. It also helps conduct heat away from these components.
The oil drain plug gasket seals the oil drain plug where it connects to the oil pan.
The engine oil filter removes contaminants from the engine oil before it circulates throughout the engine.
As components in a transmission wear, the transmission filter sifts the debris.

Any known issues when changing oil? (2 answers)

2002 Subaru Impreza

I was recently told by an automotive shop that they know of an issue with oil changes on WRX Turbo models. Not quite understanding what they are referring to but they mentioned that old oil remains in the Turbo section and unless one takes specific action to remove it, it poses a long term issue. They also mentioned that they also crank the engine without starting it to ensure that new oil flows into the oil filter and turbo. All for an additional charge of course. Has anyone seen or heard...
