I just replaced the engine in my sisters 1993 Explorer. Everything is fine except the shifting points, Second gear shifts at about 30 mph, 3rd gear at 40. It is as though it is always in passing gear mode. With rapid acceleration getting up to speed it goes through all the gears as expected. Around town driving it stays in the lower gears up to the same shift points. I have checked all the plugs and connections several times.

The transmission in your 1993 Ford Explorer may use what is called a vacuum modulator to help control the shifting. The vacuum modulator is connected to a vacuum line which is connected to engine vacuum at the other end. With no vacuum to the modulator the transmission will shift late under normal acceleration - as it would under hard acceleration when engine vacuum is low. Look for a vacuum line to the transmission and make sure it is correctly connected the proper vacuum port on the engine.
