stuck in park on 2001 Ford Escort

Car starts fine but can't get it out of park. Is this something I can fix myself?

Possibly. The brake light switch, which is mounted on the arm of the brake pedal up under the dash, could be faulty. The wiring connector that plugs into the switch could also have damage from overheating. Test and inspecct the switch and connector. You will find that this is a very likely cause of failure.
