steering wheel shakes and vibrates on 2004 Toyota Camry

Our steering wheel isn't steady; it shakes and vibrates. If held at a certain angle, the shaking is not as severe. Is this serious - does it need repair, or is it just a symptom of "aging"?

Look for unusual tire wear that is a dead give away that there is something wrong! Tire wear side to side should look even even to an untrained eye. If the car was jacked up and the wheels were free to rotate the wheels should be checked that they spin true, tires have no defects, tie rod ends and inner tie rod ends, and suspension bushings are all OK. Perhaps have he front tires balanced and or rotated if the rear tires are better.
