Question: Steering Wheel problems

 Rookie

I have notice lately that when I turn the steering wheel feels tight and doesn't want to turn. This only happens when the car has been sitting for a while. Also my check engine light comes on as well. I did take that to a mechanic and he fixed it, but it still comes on. Any suggestions. thank you
